an explosive report on a gay lobby lurking in the vatican. cnn's senior international correspondent ben wedeman is in rome. >> they are blasting in uncharacteristically strong terms, fredricka, are these reports, reports that appeared in a daily newspaper, "la repubblica" and a week live magazine panorama which suggests that indeed this group of three cardinals who were assigned by pope benedict to look into wrongdoing in the vatican found or allegedly uncovered, according to these publications a network of gay priests within the vatican who were being blackmailed according to these reports by a network of male prostitutes in rome. now, the vatican is roundly denying that these reports taking place, accusing the italian media of trying to influence the conclave, that group of 116 cardinals who will be meeting in the next few weeks in rome or rather in the vatican city to elect the next pope. fredricka in. >> in general, are people taking this report seriously throughout rome, or is there some reticence to embrace it? >> well, that depends who you speak to. now, some of the so-called veteran vat

microphone. let's work on that and then get back to her. let's go to jennifer delgado. she's in the cnn weather center in atlanta. what can you tell us? >> i can tell you a lot. we're still looking at snow coming down now for areas like amarillo, they were pounded yesterday with 19 inches of snowfall. but looking at the radar right now, right along interstate 7, you can see snow coming down. rain moving through st. louis. what we're going to see is more of that snow working in as we go throughout the afternoon. some of these locations are potentially going to pick up between 6 and 12 inches of snowfall. when you add that in with winds up to about 20, 25, of course we're going to be talking about very limited visibility. in fact, i want to point out to one bright side from yesterday. we had a lot more areas with the blizzard warnings. now notice we're just really looking at the northern part of oklahoma and that is going to be in place until 6:00 a.m. central standard time. but for kansas city as well as for areas up towards chicago and into detroit we have winter storm warnings and watc

in to connecticut will be better than it was driving down into cnn new york this morning. >> so here is my question for you, mr. southerner. someone told me don't worry about shoveling out your car, the rain will do the job for you. i believe that's not necessarily the case. like i said, it does turn the snow into concrete. but truly, how long is it looking for everybody who is in that vicinity to get cleared out to the point of functioning well? >> reporter: this could take days. i spoke with the mayor this morning and he said a week, maybe locknger than that, becau it will take time to go in for the neighborhoods and plow the roads out. they're pay loaders that come in and scoop a lot of the snow out. but one they think we're finding in these neighborhoods when you talk to people, it's neighbors helping neighbor, people doing it themselves. like javier rodriguez, listen to what he had for say. >> this is definitely the worse we've seen. i know three years ago it was bad, but not in one storm like this. i'm kind of getting crazy over here in the house. i'd actually rather be at school for once. >>

rome, john allen of cnn. he covers the vatican for the network and for the "national catholic reporter." we thank you all three for being with us. john allen, i'm going to stay with you. how much of a surprise was this? >> judy, i think this was a near total shock. just to tell you how crazy it was, i was actually scheduled to have lunch with a senior vatican official, a guy who works just down the hall from the papal apartment. as of early this morning even he didn't know it was coming. as your set-up piece indicated the shock isn't the content of the decision -- benedict had hinted fairly openly that he was receptive to the idea of a pope resigning, that actually under some circumstances a pope would have an obligation t resign if he's not able to continue to rform his duties. but certainly the timing of it, i think, fell out of a clear blew sky just like the rain we're experiencing in rome here tonight. >> woodruff: monsignor hilgartner, what about the timing of this? what does it say that he made this decision especially in contrast to what his predecessor pope john paul had been t

will be vaccinated in that state. pretty tough to see those numbers. in fact, i want to bring in my cnn colleague, wolf blitzer in washington and ali velshi here in new york as well. ali, let me start with you. the numbers seem to be staggering when you look at them state by state. overall when you hear $85 million to hit on friday, people across the country might say, that's a good start. but it's not -- it doesn't stop there. there's a lot more to it than that. >> well, first of all, that's correct, it doesn't stop there. over the course of the next seven months, you'll see a lot of cutbacks. you know, there are two schools of thought on this, ashleigh. there are some who think it's really legitimate that there are finally cuts coming and that washington does nothing without its back to a corner. so why don't we go with these cuts? because you'll never get them agreed to through negotiation. the problem -- the problem -- we have to remind of this. there are a lot of people saying democrats are fearmongering. the problem here is the hand-fisted, unfocused nature of these cuts. these are sledgeha

it is because of age and fatigue. we're getting the editor of cnn's belief blog. thank you for talking to us. we know that the pope can resign, canon law in 1917 made it possible. that said, it's incredibly unusual. >> yeah it is incredibly unusual. i was speaking with archbishop a few months ago in springfield and archbishop of miami. he said keep in mind, cardinal ratzinger when he was a cardinal had every intention of retiring. archbishops are forced into retirement at age of 75 if they have not been elevated to cardinal. before he became pope benedict, he every intention of hanging it up are, stepping into the summer of his life and enjoying retirement. he was in many ways a surprise candidate to the pope initially as we talked about. forced retirement, many of them look forward to. i have talked to a lot of cardinals in the retirement age and when you reach that age, keep in mind, many have been studying to be priests since they were teens. they look forward to not being in that position. the other thing i have been talking about, pope john ii died in office. not sure we'll see that from th
